Alleged Nephew Swindles Elderly Couple Out of Thousands

Nitra, March 11 (TASR) – An unknown man conned an elderly couple from Topolcany (Nitra region) out of €5,000 on Thursday by means of the old trick of posing as their nephew and asking them to lend him money, Nitra regional police spokesperson Renata Cuhakova told TASR on Friday.

“The phone rang at the house of an elderly married couple on Thursday, March 10. Their alleged nephew asked for a financial loan. He requested €5,000 in order to carry out a good business deal,” said Cuhakova.

According to Cuhakova, the man said at first that he would come for the money with his manager. After a while he called again, stating that only the manager would pick it up.

The 87-year-old ‘uncle’ handed the cash to an unknown person. Only later did he and his 73-year-old wife call their real nephew, who didn’t know anything about a loan, so the couple reported the matter to the police.

Cuhakova said that the criminal police department in Topolcany has begun an investigation into the crime of fraud.
