Jan Slota Withdraws Appeal, Suspended Sentence for Bribery Stands

Banska Bystrica, July 27 (TASR) – The verdict issued by the Specialised Criminal Court (STS) on April 21 that found former Zilina mayor and former Slovak National Party (SNS) chair Jan Slota guilty of bribery is valid as of Wednesday, July 26, TASR learnt from STS spokesperson Katarina Kudjakova on Thursday.

Back in April, STS sentenced Slota to a suspended sentence of one year in jail, with two years of probation.

According to Kudjakova, the appeal against the verdict was withdrawn on Wednesday, which means that the court session slated for July 31 in Banska Bystrica has been cancelled.

The bribery incident took place last year in the wake of a car crash following which the former politician offered bribes to other people involved in the accident in an attempt to dissuade them from reporting it to the police.
