Kiska and Duda Debate Possible Rail Tunnel under High Tatra Mountains

Tatranska Lomnica, February 28 (TASR) – Building an expressway linking Poprad (Presov region) beneath the High Tatra Mountains and Krakow, Poland and a rail tunnel under the mountains between Strbske Pleso and Zakopane featured prominently at talks between Presidents of Slovakia and Poland, Andrej Kiska and Andrzej Duda respectively.

This meeting in Tatranska Lomnica on Saturday and Sunday was the fourth meeting of the two presidents, who, incidentally, share the same first name. “We spent ten hours together, debating the situation in our countries, in Europe and elsewhere in the world,” Kiska said at a press conference on Sunday.

“We also discussed the possibility of creating a tunnel for the rail connection between Zakopane and Strbske Pleso. It needs to be noted that some tourist resorts in the High Tatras feature more than 50 percent Polish tourists,” said Kiska, who lives in Poprad.

At the press conference Duda also made some comments about migration and pointed to the need for preserving the Schengen area. “We want people to feel free in the EU,” said the Polish president.

According to Kiska, there’s a need for a joint European approach toward the migration crisis. “It’s logical that a possible disintegration of the Schengen area wouldn’t resolve the causes of the refugee wave and instead it would have a devastating impact – especially on Slovakia,” said Kiska.
