Pope Francis Names Archbishop Ottonello as New Nuncio in Slovakia

Bratislava, April 1 (TASR) – Pope Francis on Saturday appointed Italian Archbishop Giacomo Guido Ottonello to serve as Apostolic Nuncio in Slovakia, replacing Archbishop and lawyer Mario Giordana, who hit the mandatory retirement age (75) in January, the Slovak Bishops’ Conference (KBS) press office announced on the same day.

Born in Masone, Italy in 1946, Ottonello was ordained priest in 1971 and eventually entered into the Vatican’s diplomatic service in 1980. He subsequently served at its diplomatic missions in Pakistan, Salvador, Lebanon, France, Spain and Poland.

Ottonello was named titular Archbishop of Sasabe, Spain and papal nuncio in Panama in November 1999. Shortly afterwards, on Epiphany (January 6) 2000, he received bishop ordination from Pope John Paul II. As of 2005, he served as apostolic nuncio in Equador.
Apart from Italian, he also speaks French, Spanish and English.
