Robert Fico Sidesteps Question About his Future as Parliamentarian

Bratislava, March 27 (TASR) – Smer-SD chairman Robert Fico didn’t give a clear answer on Tuesday as to whether or not he will relinquish his MP mandate.

Upon tendering his resignation as prime minister two weeks ago, Fico stated that he wanted to remain in the Parliament at least until the new Government of Peter Pellegrini wins confidence. The motion of support was passed by the House on Monday (March 26).

When asked by reporters about his future as parliamentarian at the Tuesday press conference, Fico responded: “Do you know any politician who received more preferential votes than I? Let me exercise my mandate as I see fit.” He added that the reporter wouldn’t have addressed him this question, had she looked at the amount of his preferential votes [garnered in 2016 general election] first.

Fico stressed that he will continue to serve in the role of Smer-SD chair and Coalition Council member. “And as the chair of the most popular governing party, I intend to promote a strong social dimension and stability on the Coalition Council. That’s my task.”
