Bratislava, April 15 (TASR) – Slovakia is awash with yellow on Friday thanks to Daffodil Day – a fund-raising event organised by the League Against Cancer (LPR) every year, TASR learnt on the same day. This is the 20th year that Daffodil Day has taken place across Slovakia, and on this occasion President Andrej Kiska received League Against Cancer representatives – president Eva Siracka and executive director Eva Kovacova – at the Presidential Palace in the morning.
“We’re very pleased with this kind and valued invitation, which we consider to be the official opening of the traditional Daffodil Day. We’re glad that with public help Slovakia has joined the global cancer control programme. We hope for a successful continuation so that we can help where it’s needed most,” said Eva Siracka after the meeting.
Daffodil Day – the biggest fund-raising event in Slovakia – has been organised since 1997. This year, almost 16,000 volunteers are handing out daffodils as a symbol of support and solidarity with people diagnosed with cancer.
Over the past 19 years more than €10 million has been raised during the event. The money collected is used for free recreation stays for cancer patients, camps for children, as financial help for families with sick members and for purchasing medical equipment.
