SaS Submits Constitutional Bill to Raise Defence Budget to 2% of GDP

Bratislava, May 26 (TASR) – Opposition party Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) has submitted a constitutional bill aimed at increasing Slovakia’s defence budget by at least 0.1 percentage points each year so that eventually at least 2 percent of GDP will be spent on the military annually, TASR learnt on Friday.

Slovakia at the NATO summit in Brussels on Thursday confirmed its commitment made in 2014 to allocate 1.6 percent of its GDP yearly by the end of 2020. At the moment, the figure stands at 1.19 percent of GDP.

Former SaS defence minister Lubomir Galko (2010-11) at a press conference on Friday stated that while other European NATO members and Canada have visibly increased their defence budgets in recent years, Slovakia is still lagging behind.

“We want to see our armed forces appropriately armed, trained and prepared to safeguard the security of people living in our country in cooperation with our allies,” said Galko.
