SaS: Andrej Danko Acting Like Homophobe

Bratislava, September 9 (TASR) – The Slovak Catholic Church has found a loyal sheep in Parliamentary Chairman Andrej Danko (Slovak National Party/SNS) according to the way in which Danko presented himself as a Christian at a meeting with archbishop Stanislav Zvolensky on Thursday, Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) spokesperson Katarina Svrcekova told TASR on Friday.

“Danko’s declarations that he’ll do everything in his power to stop promoting the rights of the LGBTI community and other related values in Slovakia are outrageous. At first, Danko recognised that the rights of sexual and other minorities are true rights, but at the same time he wants to take [these rights] away from them. This shows his ignorance of the western concept of human rights, and that’s alarming given his senior state post and legal education,” said SaS MP Juraj Droba.

Danko’s opinions on human rights and ethical issues only attest to the fact that the third government of Prime Minister Robert Fico is made up of incompatible political powers held together only by state posts and access to public finances. “It’s absurd that Slovakia is trying to present an affable face when discussing human rights at the international level, while at the same time the most conservative form of Catholicism bordering on homophobia pervades in actual domestic politics. We expect that Foreign and European Affairs Minister and candidate for the post of UN secretary-general Miroslav Lajcak, at least, will oppose this Janus-faced political practice,” added Droba.
