Auxt: Geological Conditions Complicate Drilling of Zilina Tunnel

Zilina, June 21 (TASR) – Construction work on an 11-kilometre stretch of the D1 motorway between Hricovske Podhradie and Lietavska Lucka (southern Zilina bypass) will be extended by nine months due to difficult geological conditions, National Highway Company (NDS) general director Robert Auxt said after a site inspection Tuesday.

The stretch features two tunnels – Ovciarsko (2.367 kilometres) and Zilina (687 metres). While everything is going according to schedule with Ovciarsko, difficulties with the Zilina tunnel will most probably prolong the date of completion of the entire stretch to late 2018. Nonetheless, despite the difficult geological terrain, it won’t be necessary to change the route, said Auxt.

“We have drilled some 20 metres per month, which is not much. There have also been six landslides, so the delays are justified,” said Auxt.

The Hricovske Podhradie-Lietavska Lucka stretch, worth €427 million, is being constructed by a consortium of Doprastav, Strabag, Vahostav-SK and Metrostav.
