Jan Lunter Celebrates Victory, Likely Defeating Far-right Governor Kotleba
Banska Bystrica, November 5 (TASR) – Banska Bystrica regional governor candidate Jan Lunter, the greatest challenger to incumbent far-right governor Marian Kotleba, began to celebrate his victory shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday by declaring: “We’ve won!”
The cafe located in the heart of Banska Bystrica, where the candidate was awaiting election results, filled with chants “Lunter, Lunter” and “new governor”. Lunter stood on the podium flanked by his sons and supporters.
Lunter voiced his gratitude for everyone’s support and also gave a vote of thanks to former governor candidates Stanislav Micev and Martin Klus, who had withdrawn their bids in order to endorse his candidacy. According to his words, they showed to Slovakia that arriving at an agreement in order to change things for the better is possible.
Lunter’s reaction came at a time when almost 66 percent of ballots were counted, with the Statistics Office’s preliminary results indicating he managed to garner north of 45.6 percent of votes.
