Brown Bear Exhibition in Zvolen Prolonged to End of March
Zvolen, February 16 (TASR) – An exhibition about the biggest Slovak carnivore, the brown bear, at the Forestry and Woodcutting Museum (LDM) in Zvolen (Banska Bystrica region) has been prolonged to the end of March, TASR learnt on Tuesday.
In addition to information about the animal published on panels, visitors can see five stuffed bears that were the victims of traffic accidents in recent years.
According to Milan Longauer of LDM, the exhibition also includes the skull of the largest bear ever found dead in Slovakia – on the territory of the village of Lopej (Banska Bystrica region) in 2014. “This bear was observed for a long time in the Polana mountain range and was given the name Miso. He lived to the age of around 25 years and weighed almost 300 kilograms,” said Longauer.
The exhibition follows up a conference about the results of 18 months of research into bears by the Technical University in Zvolen. Experts led by Ladislav Paule collected samples of bear droppings and shed hair. Based on their research they calculated that there are over 1,200 bears living in Slovakia.
According to Longauer, this is a remarkable number. The species faced extinction in Slovakia in the early 1930s, and it was estimated in 1932 that there were only 20 bears left in the country.
