Danko: Without Djukanovic, Montenegro Wouldn't Have Been Where It Is Now
Podgorica/Bratislava, October 2 (TASR-correspondent) – Following the talks with Montenegro’s Parliamentary Chairman Ivan Brajovic on Monday, Slovak Parliamentary Chairman Andrej Danko (Slovak National Party/SNS) as part of his two-day working visit to Montenegro also met with head of the governing Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and former Montenegro’s premier Milo Djukanovic.
Danko expressed Djukanovic, who in 2006 gained independence for his country and supported Montenegro’s integration into the NATO and the EU, a great respect and support. “Without such personality as he is, Montenegro wouldn’t have been where it is,” said Danko.
Danko and Djukanovic at the joint meeting discussed the future of Montenegro in the context of its integration into the EU. The Slovak parliamentary chairman stated that the country has Slovakia’s full support in this regard.
“If depression and denying what they have done wins in Montenegro, it’ll be a disaster for the country. They cannot lose their statehood, they cannot lose what they fought for – their parliament, their government and their own president,” said Danko in reference to the growth of anti-integration tendencies in Montenegrin society.
The Slovak delegation headed by Danko also met Montenegro’s President Filip Vujanovic. “We’ve almost identical history, as we’re small states that had to fight for their identity, and it’s crucial for us to be able to keep it,” said Danko, adding that he’d like to intensify cooperation between the two countries in the areas of tourism and the economy.
The Slovak delegation’s programme for Tuesday (October 3) features mainly visits to some historical towns and ports in Montenegro as well as cultural events.
