Jahnatek: Five Major Food Categories Prices down by 12.27 Percent
Bratislava, January 26 (TASR) – Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Lubomir Jahnatek announced at a press conference on Tuesday that prices of five major food categories – butter, milk, bread, pork and poultry – have gone down 12.27 percent this month compared to November.
Jahnatek was focused on presenting the results of monitoring of compliance with a memorandum on lowered VAT on some foodstuffs – from 20 to 10 percent. The measure – part of the second social package – was introduced in October by Prime Minister Robert Fico along with representatives of the Trade and Tourism Association (ZOCR), Slovak Alliance for Modern Trade (SAMO), Slovak Agricultural and Food Chamber (SPPK), Food Chamber of Slovakia (PKS), Agrarian Chamber of Slovakia (AKS) and the Union of Pensioners in Slovakia (JDS).
Signatories of the memorandum committed themselves to showing their pricing calculations thoroughly and transparently, and to state the price with the former 20 percent VAT included for informational purposes.
VAT went down on selected foods on January 1 from the former 20 to 10 percent. The foods include fresh and refrigerated beef, domestic swine, sheep and goats. Also included are refrigerated and fresh meat and edible offal from domestic poultry, domestic rabbits and freshwater fish and related products. The list also features milk, butter and fresh bread.
