Matecna: Dishonest Retail Practices Concern Almost Entire EU

Bratislava, November 28 (TASR) – Dishonest trading practices in the EU don’t only concern Slovakia but almost all member countries, with this problem being one of key issues dealt with by Slovakia in agriculture during its Presidency of the EU Council, said Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Gabriela Matecna on Monday.

The minister was speaking at an international farming conference organised by Anton Tunega Foundation in Bratislava.

“One exemption, of course, concerns the Nordic countries, with retail chains not having such a foothold there,” said Matecna, adding that the problem concerns some 20 EU countries, with Slovakia promoting the adoption of common European legislation to tackle it.

Matecna conceded that it isn’t possible to adopt such impactful legislation within the six months of a country’s presidency, so Slovakia will approach the Maltese presidency beginning as of January to continue with the issue.

Czech Agriculture Minister Marian Jurecka, also present at the conference, said that dishonest practices certainly also concern the Czech market.

“For example, purchasing prices of milk from farmers have fallen by 30 percent in the past 20 months. Nonetheless, the prices of dairy products in retail chains have been reduced by a mere 5-7 percent, if at all. It’s obvious that the ones who are suffering the most here are farmers, because neither food producers, nor retail are evidently losing out,” added the Czech minister.
