Navigation on Danube River between Bratislava and Gabcikovo Halted

Bratislava, January 21 (TASR) – Navigation on the Danube River between Bratislava and the Gabcikovo Waterworks has been halted due to unfavourable weather and ice floes, Transport and Construction Minister Arpad Ersek (Most-Hid) told a news conference on Saturday.

Ersek visited the waterworks along with Environment Minister Laszlo Solymos (Most-Hid) earlier on Saturday. “We are here because the transport authority issued on Friday (January 20) an order to ban navigation in the section between Bratislava and the Gabcikovo Waterworks until revoked,” said Ersek. Operational headquarters of winter operation should meet in this connection on Monday (January 23) and decide on further functioning of transport on the Danube River. “Water carriers have been notified about it and they know the situation. It’s ultimately a winter and we need to count with the things like that,” added Ersek.

Solymos said they are doing their best to ensure that the river traffic is safe. “Human lives are more important than navigation,” stated the minister, adding that traffic on the Danube River will not be resumed sooner than the problem with ice floes is resolved.

Lock chambers on the Gabcikovo Waterworks are operated by Slovensky Vodohospodarsky Podnik [Slovak Water Management Company/SVP]. Director of its Bratislava plant Jozef Ducz said they suggested the transport authority the navigation be halted chiefly for safety of ship crews.
