Poll: Smer Would Have Won Election in June Ahead of SNS

Bratislava, June 22 (TASR) – Had a general election been held in mid-June, the governing-coalition Smer-SD party would have won on 26.4 percent, gaining 46 seats in the 150-seat House, TASR learnt on Wednesday.

The poll, which was carried out by Focus agency on a sample of 1,003 respondents between June 14-20, indicated that the Slovak National Party (SNS) would have come second, obtaining 14.5 percent of votes and 25 seats in Parliament. Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) would have come third on 14.1 percent, garnering 25 seats as well.

Next came OLaNO-NOVA (9.9 percent/17 seats), Kotleba-People’s Party Our Slovakia (8.4 percent/15 seats), We Are Family-Boris Kollar (6.9 percent/12 seats) and Most-Hid (5.9 percent/10 seats).

Of the parties currently in Parliament, only Siet (Network) on 1.4 percent wouldn’t have made it into the House.

The following parties would have failed to gain the 5 percent of votes required to win seats in Parliament as well: the Christian Democratic Movement/KDH on 4.8 percent, the Hungarian Community Party/SMK (3.5 percent), the Slovak Communist Party/KSS (1.3 percent). No other party would have gained more than 1 percent of the votes.

The survey showed that 69.7 percent of the respondents would have participated in an election and that 21.4 percent wouldn’t have done so. The remaining 8.9 percent were don’t knows.
