Agriculture Ministry to Support Growing of Elderberries and Apple Roses

Bratislava, February 15 (TASR) – The Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry is expanding support for farmers that cultivate somewhat unusual plants, such as strawberries, hazelnuts, elderberries and apple roses, the ministry’s press department director Vladimir Machalik announced on Wednesday.

The move is part of the Agriculture Ministry’s efforts to diversify Slovakia’s farming production in response to climate change and in a quest to ensure food security for the country.

“The diversity of plants bred in Slovakia at the moment is insufficient, affecting not only the soil, but also pollinating insects, i.e. bees, as well as farming businesses. Plants grown on a mass scale, such as rapeseed, maize, sunflowers and wheat are prone to large price fluctuations on global markets. I’m sure that domestic elderberry syrup, strawberries and hazelnuts will find fans among Slovak consumers,” said Agriculture Minister Gabriela Matecna (a Slovak National Party/SNS nominee).
