Ex-minister Stefanov Escorted to Jail after Search

Bratislava, November 20 (TASR) – Bratislava police officers escorted convicted ex-minister Igor Stefanov to prison on Monday evening following a search for him that the police had launched earlier in the day, the police have reported on Facebook.

Stefanov wasn’t at home when the police came to his home to escort him to jail for the beginning of his punishment.

Former construction and regional development minister Stefanov, who represented the Slovak National Party (SNS) in Robert Fico’s first government (2006-10), was sentenced to nine years in jail for corruption along with another SNS ex-minister Marian Janusek, who was sentenced to 11 years in jail.

Aktuality.sk website reported on Monday that Janusek was escorted to prison on time, but Stefanov was missing, so the police launched a search for him.

Last week a Supreme Court senate found both men guilty of machinations in public tenders and abusing the powers of a public official. The sentences will be carried out in a minimum security facility. They were also given fines of €30,000.
