Election2022: Heger: Bulk of Society Voted for Democrats
Zilina, October 30 (TASR) – A significant portion of Slovak society voted for democrats in the Saturday’s (October 29) regional election and rejected lies flouted by the opposition, Prime Minister Eduard Heger (OLaNO) declared in Zilina after the release of preliminary election results early on Sunday.
Heger underlined that this is a message for “populists who peddle lies, wish to attain immunity from criminal prosecution and stage an aggressive comeback to power”. “The fact that it was the democrats who received the votes and support in this election proves that we want to have democracy in Slovakia and want to preserve it,” he said.
The first-ever merging of the municipal and regional election provided a significant boost to the regional election turnout, claimed the Prime Minister. “However, it also brought many good lessons regarding the next election,” he added.
Finance Minister Igor Matovic (OLaNO) underlined that one-fourth of all regional governors elected are nominees of the OLaNO party. “We’re two years and eight months removed from the parliamentary election and these results are far from what many feared. The populists and mafiosos in the opposition believed that this would be their step towards the return to power. The democratic voter came to vote, however, and helped democratic candidates,” said Matovic.
