Fico Urges Students to Pick Studies with Good Career Prospects

Presov, May 29 (TASR) – Prime Minister Robert Fico was in Presov on Monday, meeting students at Jan Adam Rayman Grammar School in order to discuss EU affairs and visiting a company called Tomark to talk about the professional qualifications of people on the labour market and their willingness to work, TASR learnt on the same day.

In his discussion with the students, the premier urged them not to fall for ‘theories’ on the need to leave the EU, and he cautioned against isolation. “Slovakia must remain at the core of the European Union. It’s apparent that this new German-French engine is shifting into higher gear,” said Fico, adding that he wants Slovakia to be part of possible new developments involving what he called a “new quality of countries”.

With this in mind, Fico has called a meeting of the Solidarity and Development Council for this Friday in order to bring together a range of stakeholders, including social partners, investors, representatives of the self-employed, regional administration, academia and Churches.

“We’re looking to see if there is a general agreement on our push to be involved at the heart of such developments, which obviously presupposes greater integration and collaboration,” said Fico.

Fico also urged the students to elect study programmes that offer good job prospects. Noting the large number of graduates with degrees in political sciences, social work and some other humanities, Fico said that he’s come across university graduates who, having struggled to find a job in their field, have instead completed a welding course and found a job in car production or alternatively in wood-processing or engineering plants. This has proved to be the case at Tomark, which mainly produces car parts.

Also under discussion at Tomark were dual education programmes, with Tomark managers noting that this involves a great deal of paperwork.
