Gov't: Fico to Attend Extraordinary V4 Summit to Discuss Migration
Kezmarok, February 10 (TASR) – The Government at its away session in Kezmarok (Presov region) on Wednesday approved Prime Minister Robert Fico’s attendance at an extraordinary summit of the Visegrad Four (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) premiers on Monday, February 15.
The summit, which will be dedicated to the migration crisis, was called in Prague by Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, whose country is currently presiding over the Visegrad Four (V4).
The discussions at the session will be aimed at aligning the stances of the V4 countries prior to the upcoming EU summit that is due to take place in Brussels on February 18-19.
It’s expected that the prime ministers of the countries – Fico, Sobotka, Beata Szydlo of Poland and Viktor Orban of Hungary – will focus on implementing an action plan concerning the EU and Turkey to increase the protection of Europe’s outer borders. They will also discuss opportunities for an active contribution of the V4 in addressing the issue.
The discussion will also focus on the Western Balkans migration route and countries that could face the biggest influx of migrants in the near future. For this reason, Sobotka also invited Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov and Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
The V4 prime ministers will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the founding of the V4. On February 15, 1991 Hungarian Prime Minister Jozsef Antall, Czech and Slovak Federative Republic President Vaclav Havel and Polish President Lech Walesa met in Visegrad, Hungary to sign a declaration on closer cooperation between the countries on the way to European integration.
