Heat Wave Reduces Milk Production by 5-10 percent in Nitra District

Bratislava, August 19 (TASR) – The heat wave that has been tormenting Slovakia since late July with only slight relief for a few days has resulted in a daily drop in milk production in Nitra district by 5-10 percent, Matej Korpas from the Slovak Agriculture and Food Chamber (SPPK) has told TASR.

Farmers are attempting to provide relief for farming animals with some unusual measures, for example by pasturing cattle at night.

Meanwhile, as the harvest has been shifting to higher altitudes, SPPK has registered significant differences in yields among individual districts [due to the uneven distribution of precipitation in the earlier months – ed. note].

However, it seems that yields in maize in general will be lower than usual. At the same time Nitra district has indicated that autumn plants, including maize, could post better yields this year than last year.
