Kiska: Slovakia's Membership of EU and NATO Only Viable Path

Bratislava, May 1 (TASR) – Slovakia’s accession to the EU and NATO, both achieved in 2004, was the only viable path for the country, and this also holds true today, said President Andrej Kiska on Wednesday before a ceremonial lunch for people who contributed towards Slovakia’s accession to the EU and NATO 15 years ago and those who are currently responsible for Slovakia’s active participation in the EU.

According to Kiska, apart from the Velvet Revolution in 1989 and the emergence of an independent Slovakia in 1993, joining the EU and NATO were the most important events in Slovakia’s history. He called on current politicians to present positive visions for the EU and not to be afraid of speaking of the further enlargement of both the EU and NATO.

“Prosperity, democracy, respect for freedom and the dignity of every human being are the foundations of our society thanks to a united Europe and collective defence. Although we consider these things to be a matter of course, they’re precious commodities in many parts in the world, even closely beyond our eastern border,” said Kiska.
