Lajcak: Not Acting on Global Warming Issue Will Lead to Disaster
Bratislava/New York, March 24 (TASR) – If we don’t take action on the global warming issue now, it’ll be a disaster for future generations, stated Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak (a Smer-SD nominee) during his speech at a high-level meeting on climate change at the UN building in New York, TASR was told by the ministry press department on Friday.
Lajcak said that efforts by the states in this regard mustn’t depend on who is currently in power, but the efforts must be based on scientific data. “Each of us has to be part of the solution. We need to understand and further explain to the people the seriousness and insistence of the current situation so that they can better understand the challenges of climate change and thus adapt their lives to them,” said the minister.
The head of Slovak diplomacy further pointed out the need to help the most vulnerable developing countries in building capacities, introducing new technologies and developing partnerships in addressing the negative impacts of climate change.
According to forecasts by professional organisations, the migration issue will have significantly increased by 2050, with the number of people forced to leave their homes due to climate change possibly reaching 1 billion, the Foreign Affairs Ministry told TASR.
Meanwhile, Lajcak in New York held talks with United Nations General Assembly President Peter Thomson concerning the biggest challenges of global organisation in this period. Furthermore, with United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, Lajcak discussed international political issues, including Syria and the Middle East peace processes and their links to the UN political agenda.
