Government Declares 2019 Year of M.R. Stefanik

Bratislava, February 6 (TASR) – At the proposal of the Culture Ministry, the Government has agreed that 2019 will be the year of Milan Rastislav Stefanik, TASR learnt on Wednesday.

The declaration pays tribute to one of the most distinguished personalities in modern Slovak history and at the same time reflects on the anniversary that Slovakia will commemorate in the case of Stefanik. “It will be 100 years on May 4 this year since the tragic death of M. R. Stefanik near Ivanka pri Dunaji [Bratislava region], while on July 21, 2020 it will be the 140th anniversary of his birth in Kosariska near Brezova pod Bradlom [both Trencin region],” noted the Culture Ministry.
“Both of these anniversaries create at the same time a framework for activities commemorating the personality of M.R. Stefanik in the 2019-2020 years and will also be an opportunity to enhance the sites that are connected with his name,” said the ministry. One of the first events will be an away-from-home session of the Government that will be held on May 4, 2019 in an area connected with the life story of one of the founders of the 1st Czechoslovak Republic.
The total funding required for these events exceeds €3.85 million.
