Premier Calls for Shaping of Historical Memory of SNP with View to Youth

Bratislava, August 23 (TASR) – Speaking at an event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) in Bratislava on Friday, Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini (Smer-SD) called on political representatives and figures of cultural and social life in Slovakia to help in an active manner to shape a historical memory regarding SNP-related issues.

Pellegrini stated that the process of forming the youngest generation’s values in Slovakia leaves a lot to be desired. “I’m calling on political officials and the cultural and social elite of our country to shape historical memory actively in order to create ethical protection against the posthumous children of an ideology that suffered great defeat at the cost of many human victims. This is our commitment and our basic role at this time,” he stated.

The prime minister pointed to the fact that social networks currently offer plenty of “semi-truths” that deny the Holocaust, thereby humanising Nazism. “Forming respect for one’s own history isn’t a matter of a single day. The battle of ideas is a never-ending process, and it’s solely up to us to offer something more attractive than spreading hatred,” he stressed.
