Prosecutor-General Files Motion to Dissolve Kotleba's LSNS

Bratislava, May 25 (TASR) – Prosecutor-General Jaromir Ciznar on Wednesday (May 24) filed a motion with the Supreme Court to dissolve Marian Kotleba’s far-right People’s Party Our Slovakia (LSNS), spokesperson for the Prosecutor-General’s Office Andrea Predajnova told TASR on Thursday.

The Supreme Court disbanded Kotleba’s previous political party Slovenska Pospolitost (Slovak Togetherness) in 2006.

“An evaluation of a large amount of evidence has shown that the political party Kotleba-People’s Party Our Slovakia, an extremist political party with fascist tendencies, is violating the Slovak Constitution, laws and international treaties with its programme and activities. According to the opinion of the Prosecutor-General’s Office, the aim of this political party is to eliminate the current democratic system in the Slovak Republic,” stated Predajnova.

The Prosecutor-General’s Office has concluded an investigation into over 170 registered motions with a request to file a proposal to the Supreme Court to dissolve the party concerned.

Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) on May 9 called on law enforcement authorities to take action to this effect. “Because if we view this as something normal, and we take it as part of freedom of opinion or freedom of expression, we’ll be very very wrong. This has nothing to do with democracy or values, and the sooner we stop these manifestations, the better for this country,” said Fico, referring to demonstrations of extremism on the part of the party in question.
