SaS: Kicking Shot Girl on Ground Can't Be Punished with Suspended Sentence

Bratislava, July 12 (TASR) – Opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party disapproves of the plea bargain struck between the prosecutor and former members of the Police Corps who shot a girl during a car chase and later were shown kicking her on the ground in a video recording, TASR learnt on Wednesday.

According to Lubomir Galko (SaS), the video recording is nothing less than shocking. “Similarly shocking is the fact that the police officers are having fun in the situation. It’s unacceptable to give only a suspended sentence to representatives of state power with such a pathological proclivity for brutality and an absence of higher feelings,” said Galko.

The liberals maintain that the suspended sentence, condoned by the prosecutor, fails to act as a deterrent and instead signals to the public – and the Police Corps in particular – that brutality is pardoned as an inherent part of the process of exercising state power.

“We refuse to put up with this. We’re also incensed by Prosecutor-General Jaromir Ciznar’s stance. Despite his statements made in Parliament that he disagrees with crimes committed by public officials being addressed with soft plea agreements, it seems that the leadership of his organisation lacks the courage or influence to reverse the decision of the prosecutor in this matter. We expect the court to turn down this outrageous plea bargain,” concluded MP Alojz Baranik (SaS).
