President: Soldiers Should Put Lives at Risk Only If Necessary
Bratislava, November 11 (TASR) – If soldiers are to put their lives at risk, it should only be if it’s necessary to defend Slovakia and its vital interests, said President Zuzana Caputova at Petrzalka-Kopcany military cemetery in Bratislava on Monday, adding that War Veterans Day shouldn’t only be about remembering the past, but above all about a commitment to the future.
“We must never forget those who were involved in military conflict while serving their homeland. And we must never forget that we must do everything we can to avoid war with all its horrors,” said Caputova.
The president noted that November 11 was designated a holiday to honour war veterans, both alive and dead. “Thanks to this holiday, the first generations of the Czechoslovak Republic were able to honour the memory of the fallen and express their thanks to living veterans for their service to the country,” said Caputova, adding that the legacy of November 11 is too strong to be covered over or suppressed.
According to the president, War Veterans Day has a great story – it was established, was long forgotten but is now restored.
