Slovak Foreign Ministry Expresses Sorrow at Death of Boutros-Ghali
Bratislava, February 17 (TASR) – It was with deep sorrow that the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry heard the news that former secretary-general of the United Nations Boutros Boutros-Ghali died on Tuesday (February 16) at the age of 93, the ministry’s press department informed TASR on Wednesday.
Boutros-Ghali, an Egyptian lawyer, diplomat and politician, was the sixth secretary-general of the United Nations (1992-96) and the first one from Africa.
The ministry noted that Boutros-Ghali had to address numerous serious crises, including conflicts in Somalia, Rwanda and Haiti and the breakup of Yugoslavia. He was significantly involved in UN progress in the field of preventive diplomacy and in creating and maintaining peace in the world.
“The global community will remember Boutros Boutros-Ghali as a dauntless fighter for world peace and international security,” stated the ministry.
