Supreme Court to Deal with Motion on Dissolving LSNS on Monday

Bratislava, April 27 (TASR) – A five-member senate of the Supreme Court will sit on Monday to continue dealing publicly with the possible dissolution of the parliamentary far-right People’s Party Our Slovakia (LSNS).

The relevant motion was filed by Prosecutor-General Jaromir Ciznar two years ago.

The Supreme Court began dealing with the case publicly earlier in April, with Prosecutor-General’s Office representative Ivan Minar at the trial pointing to anti-Roma statements made by party figures, who have also described the current political system in Slovakia as totalitarian.

“Of course this process has political elements, as the opposing party is a political party,” said Minar in response to LSNS’s complaints of political bias.

The plaintiff also pointed to LSNS’s calls to create a voluntary militia and its actual introduction of vigilante patrols on trains on some routes in response to what the party called harassment of passengers by unadaptable Roma.

LSNS chief Marian Kotleba said that the plaintiff hasn’t presented any specific reasons that could provide grounds for dissolving the party.

“The Prosecutor-General’s Office must be apolitical, but these actions have seriously challenged its apolitical nature,” said Kotleba.

Kotleba’s earlier party – Slovak Togetherness-National Party – was banned more than a decade ago for what the Supreme Court at the time stated was the violation of the Constitution and other laws, as well as international treaties. That court case on behalf of the Prosecutor-General’s Office was also spearheaded by Minar.
