15,000 Cows in Slovakia Offered for Adoption, Children Can Also Apply

Banovce nad Bebravou, September 16 (TASR) – Anyone will be able to become an ‘adoptive parent’ of a cow from 58 farms in Slovakia under a project called Dairy Fund financed by milk producers and milk processing companies, Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Gabriela Matecna (a Slovak National Party/SNS nominee) said at the MnamFest farming festival in Banovce nad Bebravou (Trencin region) on Saturday.

“The ‘Adopt a Cow’ project, organised by the Dairy Fund, will remind people in Slovakia that milk is healthy. It’s a food containing proteins, vitamins and minerals. It’s up to us to contribute towards an increase of milk production in Slovakia,” said the minister, adding that Slovaks on average consume too little milk compared to other European countries.

“We consume 165 kilograms of milk per capita annually. It’s an incomparable figure when looking at the Czech Republic on 220 kilograms, for example,” said Matecna.

According to Slovak Dairy Association president Stanislav Voskar, 58 farms have joined the project, offering 15,000 cows in total for adoption.

“A new feature in the project is that adoption needn’t only be individual, but children’s collectives will also be able to adopt their cows and even care for them under certain conditions,” said Voskar, adding that a web application for cow adoptions was launched on the same day.
