AKO Poll: Smer in Lead on 26 Percent, Current Coalition Loses Majority

Bratislava, June 23 (TASR) – Had a general election taken place in mid-June, it would have been won by the Smer-SD party on 26 percent of the votes, TASR learnt from a poll carried out by AKO agency, which released the results on Friday.

The survey, which was conducted on a sample of 1,000 respondents between June 14-19, also showed that the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party would have been the preferred choice of 16.1 percent of respondents, while the Slovak National Party (SNS) was third on 11.7 percent.

OLaNO-NOVA would have been supported by 10 percent, followed by the far-right People’s Party Our Slovakia (LSNS) on 9.7 percent, We Are Family on 8.7 percent, Most-Hid on 7 percent and the Christian Democrats (KDH) on 6 percent.

Such an election result would have meant that Smer-SD would occupy 41 seats in Parliament, SaS 25, SNS 19, OLaNO-NOVA 16, LSNS 15, We are Family 14, Most-Hid 11 and KDH nine. The current governing coalition of Smer-SD, SNS and Most-Hid would have thus lost a majority in the House.

The ethnic-Hungarian SMK party would have failed to clear the 5-percent threshold needed to win seats in Parliament, as it would have received a mere 3.1 percent, similar to the Communist Party of Slovakia (KSS) and Siet (Network), both on 0.7 percent.

A total of 13.5 percent of people definitely would not have gone to the polls, while 17.2 percent of respondents were undecided as to their preferred party and 2.4 percent refused to say how they would vote.
