Almost 4,000 People Enroll at 'Wings for Life' Charity Run in Bratislava

Bratislava, May 6 (TASR) – Almost 4,000 people have registered for a charity run in Bratislava on Sunday making part of the fourth ‘Wings for Life’ event taking place simultaneously in more than 30 countries worldwide to raise awareness of spinal cord injury.

“The track hasn’t changed at all compared to last year. We’ll start at the Eurovea [mall], while the first part will lead through the Passenger Port. We’ll then return to show the runners the city centre from the SNP Bridge, which provides an excellent view. Via Panonska Street, we’ll get to the Petrzalka dam in the direction of Cunovo, the Danubiana [modern art museum] and further to the Gabcikovo waterworks. The finish is on the 100th kilometre close to the village of Stvrtok na Ostrove (Trnava region). I’ll root for all to see someone making it there,” event director Marcel Matanin told TASR, smiling.

As a former leading Slovak marathon runner, he knows well that this is something more than just a tough nut to crack, as the world record in this race is 88.44 kilometres recorded last year in Milan by Italian Giorgio Calcaterra.

A Catcher Car, due to be driven at the speed of 15 kilometres per hour by Rally Dakar motorcycle driver Ivan Jakes, will set off 30 minutes after the last runner crosses the start line in Bratislava to chase down the runners. The last male and female athletes to be caught by the car will be crowned champions.
