Anti-tick Socks Created by SAV Scientists to Be Unveiled at Nitra Agrokomplex

Bratislava, August 15 (TASR) – Scientists from the Slovak Academy of Science’s (SAV) Parazitological Institute have developed anti-tick socks manufactured on the basis of natural substances with a repellent effect, TASR learnt from SAV spokesperson Monika Hucakova on Wednesday.

The socks will be unveiled at the international agriculture and food fair Agrokomplex due to begin in Nitra on Thursday (August 16).

“Scientists will present a prototype of Prolen Tickfree functional fibre modified with natural substances that have a tick-repellent effect. Experts will show the people at Agrokomplex samples of fibres, functional textiles as well as their first commercial product – socks with an anti-tick function,” said Hucakova, adding that the project combines new approaches in parasitology with chemical technologies aimed at protecting humans and their pets against ticks and the dangerous diseases these parasites transmit.

Part of the exhibition at the Agrokomplex fair will include a display of future clothing accessories for people and pets with anti-tick protection. These are currently being tested at Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Kosice and at the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Kosice, as these universities are SAV’s partners in the project.
