Bugar: Threatening MPs with Fall of Government Not Good Way to Go
Bratislava, November 29 (TASR) – Threatening MPs with the fall of the Government if they don’t support a salary freeze for constitutional officials isn’t a good way to tackle the entire issue, as it creates unnecessary tension, stated Parliamentary Vice-chairman and coalition Most-Hid party head Bela Bugar on Wednesday.
Bugar was responding to Prime Minister Robert Fico’s (Smer-SD) earlier statement that he’ll link the vote on a salary freeze to a no-confidence motion in the Government if MPs don’t change their stance on the matter.
The Most-Hid head didn’t rule out the possibility of the Government falling over the salary freeze issue, as he doesn’t know whether or not it will be possible to persuade all legislators to agree to keeping salaries unchanged. “Whether it [the fall of the Government] should be risked over salaries … I’m not sure that this is the best way,” said Bugar.
Bugar even described Fico’s statement as rape. He stressed that Parliament shouldn’t serve as the Government’s maid. “It shouldn’t be the case that someone gives an order and others act as the chairman or ministers want. It’s a very bad precedent, and the prime minister has chosen the wrong path, a path that wants to order legislators what to do … stirs up unnecessary tension in the governing coalition,” said Bugar in Parliament.
