Denisa Sakova Becomes New Interior Minister

Bratislava, April 26 (TASR) – Denisa Sakova (Smer-SD) has become the new interior minister, with President Andrej Kiska appointing her in the post on Thursday.

Sakova served as Interior Ministry state secretary before taking over the ministerial post.

The new minister was nominated for the post by the governing Smer-SD party, which has the Interior Ministry based on the coalition agreement. The interior minister post was freed after Tomas Drucker (a Smer-SD nominee) resigned. He stepped down when he decided not to oust Police Corps President Tibor Gaspar.

Prior to Sakova’s appointment, Kiska stated that he isn’t happy about her nomination, as Sakova is a former aide of erstwhile interior minister Robert Kalinak. Kiska added that he doesn’t have the necessary powers to block her appointment, however. Kiska views this nomination as a wasted opportunity. The Opposition also does not like Sakova’s nomination. Meanwhile, representatives of the governing coalition say it’s necessary to give her a chance. Smer-SD labels Sakova a professional who has been serving at the Interior Ministry for a long time and, therefore, she should manage the post.
