Kazimir in Cuba Discussing Slovak Investments in Energy Sector

Bratislava, February 7 (TASR) – Finance Minister Peter Kazimir (Smer-SD) is holding a series of talks with representatives of the Cuban Government in the country’s capital of Havana to strengthen cooperation between both countries, TASR learnt from the Finance Ministry press department on Tuesday.

Kazimir first met Cuban Council of Ministers Vice-president Ricardo Cabrisas to discuss mutual Cuban-Slovak relations. Later on he held talks with Cuban Finance and Prices Minister Lina Pedraza and Foreign Trade and Investment Minister Rodrigo Malmierca.

“To both meetings we brought proposals for model contracts on investment protection and on scrapping double taxation. We want to discuss them further with the Cuban partners so that we are able to sign them in a form that fits both parties,” said Kazimir after the meetings.

According to the Finance Ministry, the Cuban representatives appreciated the Slovak effort and promised to hold further negotiations aimed at finalising the contracts.

Kazimir also presented to the Cuban partners the interest of Slovak entrepreneurs in further investing in Cuba, especially in the energy sector. A project concerning the construction of the sixth block of Cuba’s Mariel thermal power plant, which is being carried out by Slovak suppliers, has already been launched. Moreover, Kazimir and Malmierca spoke about a project for the reconstruction of the first block of Cuba’s Felton power plant. Kazimir is set to make this visit later in the day.
