European Indoor Athletics: Slovak Volko Takes Home Silver in 60m
Belgrade, March 6 (TASR) – Slovak sprinter Jan Volko on Saturday (March 4) won the silver medal in the 60m at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade with a new national record of 6.58 seconds.
Gold went to defending champion and Briton Richard Kilty, who finished in 6.54 seconds and bronze went to Swede Sulayman Hamilton with a time of 6.63 seconds.
“I’m speechless, I hadn’t hoped for that even in my deepest dream. I’m still not fully realising what I’ve actually achieved,” said the 20-year-old Volko after the race.
“I can’t really explain what has actually happened. My goal in Belgrade was to get into the semi-finals and now I’m travelling home with silver, it’s unbelievable. Maybe it’s because I had only such modest expectations,” added the young sprinter of BK HNTN Bratislava, who broke the national record twice in Belgrade.
Volko started at European Indoor Athletics for the first time two years ago in Prague and ended up 30th in the heats.
