Focus: Smer Would Have Won Election in April, Ahead of SaS and SNS

Bratislava, May 2 (TASR) – Had a general election taken place in late April, it would have been won by the governing Smer-SD party on 20.5 percent of the votes, ahead of Opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) on 13.2 percent and the coalition Slovak National Party (SNS) on 10.1 percent, TASR learnt from Focus agency, which conducted the poll on a sample of 1,005 respondents between April 24-30.

Another five parties would have made it into Parliament – far-right People’s Party Our Slovakia (LSNS) on 9.3 percent of votes, OLaNO and We Are Family-Boris Kollar both on 9.1 percent, the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) on 6.8 percent and Most-Hid on 5.8 percent.

Progressive Slovakia (3.6 percent), the ethnic-Hungarian SMK party (3.3 percent) and Together-Civic Democracy (2.8 percent) would have failed to clear the 5-percent threshold needed to win representation in Parliament. Other parties would have gained less than 2-percent support.

According to the poll, Smer-SD would have garnered 37 seats in Parliament, SaS 24 seats, SNS 18 seats, LSNS 17 seats, OLaNO and We Are Family 16 seats each, while KDH would have gained 12 seats and Most-Hid ten.

As many as 71.5 percent of the respondents would have gone to the polling stations, while 16.5 percent of the respondents wouldn’t have voted. The remaining respondents wouldn’t have known for whom to vote.
