Fico: Slovakia Shouldn't Take Part in Russophobic Campaign

Bratislava, March 28 (TASR) – The decision to invite home the Slovak Ambassador from Moscow for consultations is the right move, Smer-SD chair and ex-premier Robert Fico said in a video released on a social network website on Wednesday.

Fico spoke in response to the decision by the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry to recall its ambassador from Moscow over the poisoning of ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in United Kingdom.

“I’m very glad. I learnt of this decision by the Slovak diplomacy with joy, seeing as we displayed not only a sovereign but also prudent stance as a country,” claimed Fico, who voiced hope that Slovakia will continue to display its sovereignty through the right course of action in the future.

Fico underlined that Slovakia is viewed as a trustworthy partner abroad, one who meets its international commitments, but these certainly don’t involve “painting the Russian Federation as a global enemy no. 1 at every cost and without evidence”.

According to Fico, Slovakia must pursue good relations with Russia and could also play a more active role in bridging Europe with Russia. “Because Europe needs Russia and Russia needs Europe,” he stated.
