Government Okays 6-percent Salary Hikes for Teachers as of September
Bratislava, July 24 (TASR) – Salaries of teachers, including university lecturers, are due to increase by 6 percent as of September, with other increases by the same percentage due in September 2018 and 2019, according to a Government decision on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Government Manifesto also stipulates salary increases for teachers after 2020.
“The approval today … confirms that the Slovak National Party (SNS) is keeping its promise to boost the attractiveness and evaluation of the teaching profession. We’ve gone through very complicated and lengthy talks with the Association of Slovak Towns and Villages (ZMOS), and I’m pleased that we’ve also achieved consent from the trade unions with a compromise proposal,” said Education, Science, Research and Sport Minister Peter Plavcan (a Slovak National Party/SNS nominee). He added that apart from the salary hikes guaranteed by the Government Manifesto, the current Government has secured an increase of teachers’ salaries by almost 39 percent in total.
Teachers’ remunerations were increased twice last year – in January by 4 percent and in September by 6 percent. Apart from that, Plavcan wanted to ensure a 6-percent hike as of September 2017 beyond the Manifesto, but an agreement with ZMOS was needed, as nurseries, primary schools and art schools are run by municipalities.
