INEKO: Slovakia's Best Hospitals are in Banska Bystrica and Stara Lubovna
Bratislava, October 8 (TASR) – F. D. Roosevelt Faculty Hospital in Banska Bystrica and Stara Lubovna Hospital (Presov region) are the best hospitals in Slovakia this year, according to an evaluation of health-care facilities carried out by the Institute for Economic and Social Reforms (INEKO), TASR learnt from INEKO analyst Dusan Zachar on Monday.
The hospital in Banska Bystrica received the best ranking in the category of state university and faculty hospitals, while the hospital in Stara Lubovna topped the list of general hospitals.
Regarding the state university and faculty hospitals category, the Martin Faculty Hospital came second followed by SNP Central Military Hospital in Ruzomberok (both Zilina region). As for general hospitals, the second place went to Kosice-Saca Hospital followed by Poprad State Hospital (Presov region). The complete ranking is available on the website nemocnice.ineko.sk.
“We compared the health-care facilities in five main areas. These were the satisfaction of patients, quality of health care provided in the hospital, governance, transparency and diagnosis difficulty,” said Dusan Zachar of INEKO.
In the fourth year of the assessment of hospitals, the case mix index values were taken into account for the first time. The case mix index indicates the demanding character of patients’ diagnoses in 2017, through which we’ve achieved to some extent the “risk weighing” of some quality indicators. “The disadvantage of the previous assessment was that in assessing the quality of health care provided, we looked only at the output of the hospital. We didn’t take into account the demandingness of patients coming to the hospital,” INEKO director Peter Golias told TASR.
Golias explained that a hospital that could have had more demanding patients in the input, also showed worse results in the output. “That’s why we automatically put it lower in our rankings,” added Golias. The director of the institute praised the DRG system, which enabled them to get this data for the first time ever. INEKO therefore decided to also include this parameter in the hospital assessment methodology.
