Korcok: We're Far from Calling Britain's Offer 'Fair and Acceptable'
Bratislava, June 27 (TASR) – The Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry is far from being able to call the United Kingdom’s offer for EU citizens living there fair and acceptable, said the ministry’s State Secretary Ivan Korcok on Tuesday.
Korcok was speaking after the British Government unveiled a detailed proposal outlining its plan concerning the rights of EU citizens in the UK post-Brexit.
“I’m happy that this important offer is now on the table because it’s absolutely critical and substantial for the preservation of the rights of our citizens. With more than 20 pages, it’s a very comprehensive document. It does offer some vision upon first reading, but we expected to receive a more ambitious document. We’re far from being able to say that the United Kingdom’s offer for EU citizens living there is fair and acceptable,” said Korcok.
He went on to say that “we would be happy to see Britain take just as active an approach to another issue – financial affairs, which we realise will be a very sensitive topic”.
It’s clear at this point that Slovaks residing in the UK for at least five years will have the best shot at having their current rights preserved, he asserted. “Everybody else will need to reckon with the fact that their legal status will be different and will emerge from negotiations,” said Korcok.
