Matecna: Number of Beekeepers Rising, But They're Too Old

Bratislava, May 17 (TASR) – The number of beekeepers in Slovakia has risen by 16 percent since 2010, with the number of colonies being up by 12 percent over the same period, Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Gabriela Matecna (a Slovak National Party/SNS) nominee said after the Cabinet session on Wednesday.

The Government at the meeting approved a national strategy for beekeeping in Slovakia for the next three years, with new beekeepers and the beekeeper association to get subsidies totalling almost €1.2 million each year.

“We have almost 290,000 colonies of bees and 18,000 beekeepers at the moment. It’s sad that even though the number of beekeepers has risen, their average age is around 60. So, the Government’s directives on options of support for education and training courses not only for beekeepers and their associations but also schools are designed to tackle this,” said Matecna.
