Pellegrini in TV Speech Calls for Public Discipline in Facing Coronavirus

Bratislava, March 13 (TASR) – Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini (Smer-SD) delivered an extraordinary televised speech on the new coronavirus on Friday evening, calling on the public to be disciplined and show solidarity with others, and to observe all necessary safety precautions.

“This isn’t about the state’s high-handedness, but exclusively about efforts to prevent an uncontrolled spread of the virus in Slovakia,” said Pellegrini.

“Our own discipline is a key condition for overcoming the contagion. Let’s remember a simple rule: how we behave now, this is how the pandemic will look in two weeks,” said Pellegrini.

The prime minister decried what he called the stirring up of “artificial panic” and its misuse for political purposes.

“Let’s not be ashamed of wearing face masks and refusing personal contacts and handshakes with our colleagues and friends. These are steps for the sake of the whole of society and nobody can condemn us for that,” said Pellegrini, adding that everyone should behave as if they were infected.

He also spoke of the need for solidarity, such as in helping neighbours with shopping.
