Poll: Almost Two Thirds of Slovaks Would Have Voted to Stay in EU

Bratislava, June 23 (TASR) – Had a referendum on Slovakia’s remaining in the EU been held between June 14-20, almost two thirds of the participants would have voted to stay put, TASR learnt on Thursday from the results of a Focus agency poll.

The poll, which was carried out on a sample of 1,003 respondents aged over 18, showed that 62.1 percent of the respondents would have opted to stay in the EU, while 22.6 percent would have voted for the opposite and 15.3 percent weren’t able to make a decision.

Of those who would have voted in favour of the EU, 43.5 percent think that the EU is a good project without which there wouldn’t be a peaceful and prosperous future for Europe, while 37.5 percent are inclined towards the statement that although the EU doesn’t work properly, departure would be very costly for Slovakia. Less than a fifth of this group of respondents (18.3 percent) thinks that the EU doesn’t have a good outlook, but it would be risky to secede in these times.
