Poll: Smer Would Have Won Election in August Ahead of SNS and SaS

Bratislava, August 19 (TASR) – Had a general election been held between August 11-16, the governing-coalition Smer-SD party would have won on 27 percent (47 seats in the 150-seat House), compared to its result of 28.3 percent in the general election on March 5, TASR learnt on Wednesday.

The poll, which was carried out by Focus agency on a sample of 1,002 respondents, indicated that the Slovak National Party (SNS) would have placed second on 14 percent (24 seats), followed by Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) on 13.7 percent (24 seats).

Another four parties would have made it into Parliament – Ordinary People-NOVA (9.7 percent/17 seats), Kotleba-People’s Party Our Slovakia (8.9 percent/15 seats), We Are Family-Boris Kollar (6.9 percent/12 seats) and Most-Hid (6.1 percent/11 seats).

Siet (Network) party (1.4 percent), the Christian Democratic Movement/KDH (4.6 percent) and the Hungarian Community Party/SMK (3.6 percent) would have all stayed outside the gates of Parliament.

The following parties would have also failed to gain the 5 percent of votes required to win seats in Parliament: the Slovak Green Party/SZS (1.1 percent) the Slovak Communist Party/KSS (0.9 percent), SDKU and Sanca (both 0.5 percent), SKOK and the Party of Modern Slovakia/SMS (both 0.3 percent) and Slovak Democrats/DS (0.2 percent). Other parties would have failed to reach even 0.1 percent.

Around 14 percent of the respondents wouldn’t have voted this time, while 9.3 percent wouldn’t have known whom to vote for.
