Sagan Wins Another Stage at Tirreno-Adriatico
Fermo, March 12 (TASR) – Slovak cyclist Peter Sagan (Bora-Hangrohe) sprinted to victory in stage five of the Tirreno-Adriatico race in Italy on Sunday, beating Thibaut Pinot (France/FDJ) and Primoz Roglic (Slovenia/LottoNL-Jumbo).
The two-times world champion thereby notched up his third victory of the season, following wins in the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne classic last month and on stage three of the Tirreno-Adriatico two days ago.
In a hilly 209-kilometre stage, Sagan featured in the peloton throughout the race, remaining part of the front group after most riders were winnowed out in the final climb. He then savoured the finish in a small group of riders in the picturesque streets of the ancient town of Fermo. The Slovak cyclist made his move just before the final corner, giving his rivals no chance in the final straight.
Colombian climbing specialist Nairo Quintana (Movistar) has kept first place in the overall rankings, while number two in the general classification, English rider Adam Yates (Orica–Scott), retired from the race on Sunday due to stomach problems.
Monday’s 168-kilometre stage six will take the riders from Ascoli Piceno to Civitanova Marche.
