SaS, OLaNO, KDH and SMK Hold Round Table Talks on Cooperation

Bratislava, April 13 (TASR) – Opposition parties Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) and OLaNO along with the non-parliamentary ethnic-Hungarian SMK party and the non-parliamentary Christian Democratic Movement (KDH)  might form the basis of the future government, stated the leaders of these parties, Richard Sulik, Igor Matovic, Alojz Hlina and Jozsef Menyhart, respectively, after holding joint round table talks on Friday.

Despite holding different views on certain issues, the party leaders described the talks as fruitful.

“There’s a need to create an appropriate platform for SMK, SaS, OLaNO and KDH so that they, as the basis of the future governing coalition, can discuss basic political and social issues,” said Menyhart, stressing that Hungarians living in Slovakia have always stood on the right side of the barricades at decisive moments. He added that most Hungarians in Slovakia also want a decent Slovakia.

“We’ve shown that the Opposition can negotiate and act jointly,” said Sulik after the meeting, adding that even though the parties will fight for voters on an individual basis, this battle should be fair so that their cooperation can quickly be transformed into decent coalition cooperation after the election.

“The fact that the Opposition parties have met at a single negotiating table for the first time in a long time is a good sign. People want to see an alternative, and this is a good way to give people a response,” added Matovic, giving assurances that there is a decent alternative to the current Government.

KDH head Hlina expressed a positive attitude towards the meeting as well. “We have different worlds, but that doesn’t mean that we’re prevented from sitting at a single table and looking for what connects us. Politics is a struggle, but we need to look for an intersection,” he said, adding that he’s ready to participate in the next meeting of this type, which should take place at OLaNO headquarters.
